Nobody remembers being a baby. Scientists call it infantile amnesia: almost everything you experienced before the age of three or four is gone, not stored badly but erased, wiped as the young brain rebuilds itself. [1] Children often say strange things before that wiping finishes. Every pediatrician has a story. The toddler who describes a house she has never lived in. The boy who talks about his other mother. Most parents laugh and write it in the baby book. Some stop laughing.

A psychiatrist at the University of Virginia named Ian Stevenson spent forty years collecting cases like these, traveling the world to interview children who described previous lives in specific detail. His division has now recorded around two thousand five hundred of them. The memories usually appear between the ages of two and five and fade by seven. [2] And in a book published in 1997, Stevenson described the part of his research he found hardest to explain: children born with birthmarks and deformities in the exact places where the person they claimed to have been was wounded at the moment of death. [3]

Nora Pell was thirty-eight. She waited tables at a diner off the interstate, and raised her son Theo alone, and lived in a duplex where the neighbor's television came through the wall every night at eleven. She had always had the feeling of having misplaced something large. Not keys. A life.

Her mother died in May. Clearing out the attic, Nora found a child's diary in a shoebox, written in pencil, in her own six-year-old handwriting. She did not remember writing it.
