Adrian Kole sold enterprise software to hospitals. He was good at it in the way people are good at things they learned out of fear. He had grown up in a two-bedroom rental in Gary, Indiana, the son of a school janitor named Frank, and he had spent every year since college sanding the edges off that fact.
His father had been a drunk, and a kind one. Frank Kole had taught him to ride a bike in the parking lot of the elementary school where he worked nights, running alongside with one hand on the seat, smelling of floor wax and Old Crow, shouting you got it, you got it, you got it. He had come to every one of Adrian's track meets in his work uniform. He had died when Adrian was twenty-two, of a liver that gave up, and Adrian had cried at the funeral and then gone back to Chicago and never, not once, mentioned him at work.
The invitation came on heavy cream card stock, with no return address. A date, a time, and an address in the Loop. At the bottom, embossed and uninked, so you could only see it when you tilted the card toward the light, a circle with eleven points.
