Freemasonry calls God by a particular name. Not Lord, not Father. The Great Architect of the Universe. It is a real term, used in Masonic lodges around the world for centuries, a phrase chosen so that men of different faiths could sit in the same room and pray to the same builder. [1]
The tools of the order are builder's tools. The square and the compasses, on every lodge building and ring and bumper sticker. The plumb line. The level. The central legend of the order is about the construction of King Solomon's Temple and its master builder, Hiram Abiff, who was murdered for refusing to reveal a secret word. Masons have been at the center of conspiracy theories for three hundred years, mostly because they are a fraternity with private rituals, and people distrust what they cannot see.
Most Masons will tell you there is no great secret. They are right. Most Masons are dentists and insurance agents and retired machinists who like ritual, history, and charity, and who raise money for children's hospitals. The secrets are mostly handshakes.
But the symbols are set into the foundations of the country. On September 18, 1793, George Washington laid the cornerstone of the United States Capitol in a full Masonic ceremony, wearing a Masonic apron, and an engraved silver plate was set beneath the stone. [2]
Hugh Delacroix was a Mason for twenty years before he learned that the symbols were older than the order. That the order had inherited them, the way a family inherits a house without knowing what was buried in the basement.
