Then she said the other thing. She said that afternoon she'd sat down at the piano after a lesson and played the Chopin Ballade in G minor from memory, start to finish. Rosa taught scales to eight-year-olds in a strip mall. She'd been turned down by three conservatories. She had never, ever gotten past the second page of that piece. Her student was standing in the doorway crying.
