Marcus Okoye spent eight years in the Marines and four in private security. He was good. Calm, observant, the kind of man you wanted at your back. When a firm offered him a position on a permanent team at a remote compound, eighteen months of training and then a lifetime retainer, he almost said no. Then they told him about the second contract.

In the event of a catastrophic event, the firm explained, the client's facility would shelter not only the client and his family, but also the security team. And the security team's families.

Marcus had a wife, Danielle, and a son who was six. He had grown up in a neighborhood where nobody came when things went wrong. He knew what happened to ordinary people when the lights went out and stayed out. This was a seat in the lifeboat.

There was one condition. Everyone on the team, and every family member, would wear a biometric wristband at all times inside the facility. It controlled access to the food storage, the water treatment, the medical bay, the doors between sections. It monitored heart rate, location, and stress. And it could, the manual said in careful language, deliver a corrective stimulus.
