Dale Prewitt started preparing in 2004. He was thirty-six, a long-haul trucker with a bad back and a mortgage on a house he could not afford, and a supervisor half his age who called him buddy. He watched a documentary about the electrical grid one night in a truck stop in Tennessee, and something in him clicked into place.

The world was fragile. Everyone else was too stupid to see it. When it went, the men who had been laughed at would be the ones who mattered.

Over twenty years, he built it all. Forty acres of North Carolina woods, paid off in cash. A bunker under the barn. Two years of food. Solar power. Wells. A library of manuals on farming and medicine and radio. He joined forums. He became, in a small way, famous on them. Other men asked his advice. For the first time in his life, people listened when he talked.

He kept a notebook. The early entries are careful, almost scholarly. Supply lists. Calculations. Then, over the years, the tone changes.

His wife left in 2019. She said he had stopped living in the world. She said he was waiting for it to die so he could finally feel alive in it.

He wrote that down, too. He did not disagree.
