Cyrus Bell was nineteen in November 1910, a steward at the Jekyll Island Club. He served meals, carried luggage, laid fires, and kept the service ledger in which every meal, every bottle, and every request was written down by guest name. He was proud of that ledger. He had the neatest handwriting on the island.
The week before the guests arrived, the club manager called the staff together and gave them a rule he said came from the guests themselves.
You served Mr. Nelson, Mr. Frank, Mr. Paul, Mr. Harry, Mr. Ben. You did not ask what they were working on. When they left, you forgot they had been there.
Cyrus was paid five dollars extra for that week. It was a great deal of money. He gave most of it to his mother.
