Nikola Tesla invented much of the modern world. The alternating current system that powers every home and factory on Earth. The induction motor. Foundational work in radio, remote control, and wireless transmission. In the 1890s he was one of the most famous men alive. He lit the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. He produced artificial lightning in a laboratory in Colorado Springs that could be heard miles away. [1]
He died alone, in debt, in Room 3327 of the Hotel New Yorker in Manhattan, on January 7, 1943. He was eighty-six. [1]
In his last decades, Tesla had told reporters about inventions that sounded like science fiction. A system to transmit electrical power without wires, anywhere in the world. And a particle beam weapon, which the newspapers called a death ray, that he claimed could bring down ten thousand airplanes at a distance of two hundred and fifty miles and make any nation invulnerable to attack. [2]
Within days of his death, in the middle of World War II, the federal government's Office of Alien Property took possession of all of his belongings, including trunks of papers and notebooks, though Tesla had been an American citizen for fifty years. [3] An MIT electrical engineer named John G. Trump was asked to examine them. His report concluded that Tesla's papers were primarily speculative and philosophical in nature and did not include new, sound, workable principles or methods. The papers were eventually released to Tesla's family and many are now in a museum in Belgrade. [3]
The FBI's files on Tesla, released through Freedom of Information requests, show that the Bureau was interested in his papers. Researchers have argued ever since about whether everything was returned. [4]
