Daniel Rosen had spent eleven years on the Copper Scroll. He was an engineer, not an archaeologist, a man who had made a small fortune designing water systems and who had become obsessed with the scroll in his forties, after visiting the museum on a business trip. He had read every translation. He had walked the Judean wilderness with a GPS and a translation in his pocket, matching ancient words to wadis and ruins and cisterns. He had been laughed at by professionals, and he had kept going.
In his eleventh year, he found the thirty-second location.
He knew it the way a man knows his own face. A ruined cistern beneath a collapsed wall, matching every word of the entry: the depth, the direction, the steps going down to the east. Ground-penetrating radar showed a void beneath the floor, rectangular, man-made, untouched.
There was only one problem. The site was on land protected by the Antiquities Authority. Any excavation required a permit, an archaeologist, a team, months of paperwork. Everything found would belong to the state. And Daniel's name, after eleven years, might appear in a footnote.
