Walter Gaines found the pamphlet in 1979, at a flea market, when he was thirty. He paid a quarter for it. He was a high school math teacher with a wife named June and a farm in Bedford County that had been in her family for four generations. He read it in one sitting, on the porch, and when he finished, he looked out at the land, at the hills and creeks and old stone walls, and felt something shift in his chest that would not shift back for the rest of his life.
The vault was within four miles of Buford's. Buford's, the tavern, had stood at a crossroads that was now a gas station. The Gaines farm was three and a half miles away.
He bought every book on cryptography the library could order. He taught himself to program a computer. He filled a notebook with numbers, then another, then another.
June supported him at first. It was a hobby. It was harmless. It was a way for a quiet man to have an adventure.
