Corey Haslam was twenty-two. He had grown up in Halifax, worked construction since he was sixteen, and watched every episode of the television show with his mother, who was sick, and who loved it. She liked the legends best. The Templars. The coconut fiber. The stone with the symbols.

When a private search crew advertised for seasonal laborers, he applied. The pay was decent. And he wanted, more than he could explain, to bring his mother something from the island. A story. A photograph. Something real.

The foreman met the new crew on the first morning, on the muddy ground near the Money Pit, as the searchers call it, and gave them the safety briefing. Hard hats. Gas monitors. Harnesses. And then, almost as an afterthought, half joking, the island's oldest rule.

The older men laughed. Corey laughed too.
