I'm writing this under a lot of strain. I don't have much time. Something has found out where I live.
When you've read what I've written, you'll understand why I can't sleep. And why I keep looking at the door.
During the First World War, I was an officer on a cargo ship in the Pacific. One day, in one of the loneliest stretches of open ocean in the world, our ship was captured by a German raider. They treated us fairly. But five days later, I escaped in a small lifeboat with a little water and food.
I drifted for days. No land. No ships. Just the burning sun and the endless water. I didn't know where I was.
Then one night I fell asleep in the boat, and when I woke, everything had changed.
The fire is still burning
