THE CAMPFIRE · ORIGINAL
The Quiet Game
At sleepovers they played the Quiet Game. Whoever makes the first sound loses. One night, in the dark, everyone stayed silent for an hour. Then someone laughed. All six of them had their hands over their mouths.

You know the Quiet Game. Every kid knows it. Parents invented it to get kids to shut up in the car. Everyone stays silent. The first one to make a sound loses.
My friends and I played it at sleepovers when we were eleven. But we played it our way. In the dark.
Lights off. Everyone in sleeping bags on the basement floor, in a circle, heads in the middle. Somebody says "Go." And then total silence. No talking. No giggling. No whispering. No moving, if you can help it.
The first one to make a noise has to do a dare.
There were six of us that night. At Maddie's house. Me, Maddie, Priya, Jordan, Kayla and Ava.
Maddie's basement was the best place to play. It was huge, and totally dark when you turned the lights off. No windows. Just a little red light on the furnace in the corner.
Maddie said, "Go."
And it got quiet.
