Forget the fairy tales you know. Before Disney, the Brothers Grimm wrote down the stories that German grandmothers told children at night, more than two hundred years ago. Most of them were not for children at all.
This is one of the worst.
There was once a miller who had a beautiful daughter. When she was old enough, he wanted her married well. And one day, a suitor came. He seemed very rich, and well-dressed, and polite. The miller couldn't find anything wrong with him. So he promised his daughter to him.
But the girl didn't like him. She couldn't say why. Whenever she looked at him, she felt a chill. Her heart shrank inside her.
One day, the bridegroom said to her, "You're my bride, and you've never visited me. You must come see my house."
"I don't know where it is," she said.
"Out in the dark forest," he said. "I'll mark the path. Next Sunday, come."
