From 1972 until 1995, the United States government paid people to see things from a distance with their minds. This is not a rumor. The program went by several names, the last of which was Stargate. It was run by the Army and the CIA, and when it was declassified, the documents showed that trained "remote viewers" sat in quiet rooms at Fort Meade, Maryland, and tried to describe hidden enemy facilities thousands of miles away. The official conclusion was that the results were never useful enough to justify the cost.1
The official conclusion did not mention the unit that kept going after 1995.
Teresa Alvarez worked nights at a veterans hospital outside San Antonio. She had worked there for eleven years, long enough to know that every war leaves a particular shape in the men who come back from it. Vietnam men startle. Desert Storm men itch. The ones from Iraq and Afghanistan check exits. She knew the shapes.
The nine men on the third floor did not match any war she knew.
