CLERK'S PREFACE
At 12:30 p.m. on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dealey Plaza in Dallas. In 1964 the Warren Commission concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.1 In 1979 the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded that Kennedy was probably killed as a result of a conspiracy, relying heavily on an acoustic analysis of a police radio recording. In 1982 a National Academy of Sciences panel disputed that analysis.2 In 2025 the government released tens of thousands of previously withheld pages.3
On a dry, sunny day, one man on the north side of Elm Street opened a black umbrella as the motorcade approached and pumped it up and down. In 1978, a Dallas warehouse manager named Louie Steven Witt testified before the House committee that he was that man. He said it was a heckle aimed at the President's father, Joseph Kennedy, who as ambassador had supported Neville Chamberlain, whose symbol was the umbrella. He said he wished he'd stayed home.4
The following statements concern a second man. He has never been identified.
STATEMENT 1. NIGHT NURSE, DALLAS (2017).
Mr. Harold Beck was ninety-one. He couldn't sleep, so I sat with him at three in the morning. He said he needed to tell one person before he went.
