Nellie Kearns was seventeen in 1921, and she was the fastest painter on the floor of the studio in Orange, New Jersey. She could do two hundred and fifty dials a day. She was paid by the dial. She bought her mother a winter coat, and her little sister, Agnes, a pair of patent leather shoes, and herself a compact, a little gold-colored case for face powder, which was the most beautiful thing she had ever owned.
There was a rule on the studio floor. It was painted on a sign above the door, and the supervisors said it every morning, cheerfully, the way you say good morning.
RADIUM IS GOOD FOR YOU. IT PUTS THE ROSES IN YOUR CHEEKS.
The supervisors were not lying, exactly. They had been told the same thing. Everyone had. Radium was in the face creams on every department store counter. Radium was in the tonics the doctors prescribed. The girls glowed when they walked home at night, the dust on their clothes and hair shimmering faintly in the dark, and people on the street turned to look, and the girls laughed. They called themselves the ghost girls.
