LAYER 1. BASE MAP. SOHO, LONDON, 1854.
In late August 1854, cholera tore through a few blocks of Soho in London. Within about ten days, more than five hundred people were dead. Most doctors at the time believed cholera spread through bad air, a "miasma" rising from filth.1
A doctor named John Snow did not believe it. He went door to door. He marked every death on a street map with a small black bar, stacked up like coins outside each house. The bars clustered around one public water pump on Broad Street. He took his evidence to the parish board, and on September 8 they removed the pump's handle. The outbreak was already fading, but Snow's map became one of the most famous images in medicine: the moment people learned to follow the evidence to the source.1
Nadia Haddad had a framed lithograph of that map over her desk. Her grandfather, a public health officer in Beirut, had given it to her when she got into epidemiology school. On the back, in his handwriting, in Arabic and then in English:
MARK THE PUMP. NEVER MARK THE PEOPLE.
She thought it was a lecture about ethics. It was an instruction.
