In southwestern Vermont there is a mountain called Glastenbury. It is covered in thick forest. There was once a logging town on it. By the 1930s the town was almost empty. Today nobody lives there.1

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, people started disappearing in the woods around it.1

In November 1945, a 74-year-old hunting guide who knew the mountain well went out with a group of hunters, walked ahead of them, and was never seen again.1

On December 1, 1946, an 18-year-old college student set out from her dormitory at Bennington College for a walk on the Long Trail, a hiking path that crosses the area. Witnesses saw her on the trail that afternoon. She was wearing a red parka. She never came back.2

Her disappearance caused a huge search. Hundreds of people combed the woods. The search exposed how little a small sheriff's office could do, and the case helped push Vermont to create a statewide police force the next year.2 She has never been found.

In December 1949, a 68-year-old veteran boarded a bus bound for Bennington and was never seen again. In the version told locally ever since, other passengers saw him asleep in his seat, his things still on the rack, and he was simply not on the bus when it arrived.1

In 1950, an 8-year-old boy disappeared from his family's truck while his mother stepped away for a few minutes. Search dogs followed his scent to a road, and then lost it.1

That same year, a woman out hiking with her cousin slipped in a stream, said she would go back to camp to change, and never arrived. Her body was found months later, in an area searchers said they had already covered.1

Five cases in five years, in one small area. The writer Joseph Citro later named it the Bennington Triangle.1 No disappearance has ever been solved.
