Every video game you have ever played cheats in the same way. It only draws what you can see. Turn your back on a mountain and the mountain stops existing, at least as far as the computer is concerned. It saves the memory. Turn around and the game draws it again so fast you never notice. Programmers call it culling. It is the reason a phone can run a world.1
Physics has a stranger version of the same idea. John Wheeler, the physicist who worked alongside Einstein at Princeton and gave the black hole its name, spent his last decades arguing that no phenomenon is real until it is observed.2 In 2022, the Nobel Prize in Physics went to three scientists whose experiments showed that particles do not appear to have definite properties until they are measured. Science writers summed up the result in one sentence that went around the world: the universe is not locally real.3
Daniel Okafor worked overnights at a data center outside Reno, a windowless building the size of three football fields, cold enough to see your breath, roaring with the white noise of ten thousand fans. He had a lot of time to think, and he had been thinking about culling for years.
So he ran an experiment nobody had asked for. He pointed eleven cheap cameras at an empty server aisle and set them to record to a drive that no human would ever watch. No live feed. No monitor. No one looking. Then, every few nights, he went back and checked the footage.
