MEMO 01. JANUARY 30. 11:52 PM.
Okay. I'm recording this because I edit audio for a living and if I don't document it I'll convince myself tomorrow that I imagined it.
I bought a box of reel-to-reel tapes at a university surplus auction. Thirty-five dollars. Box stamped MERIDIAN 1963. Session notes from a sensory deprivation study. That's real, by the way, that kind of study. McGill ran the famous one in 1951, partly paid for by Canada's defense research board. Twenty dollars a day to lie in a cubicle with goggles and padded gloves on. Within days, healthy people were seeing things that weren't there.1
This box is different. One tape, eleven seconds of a tone. Forty volunteers listened to it in the dark. According to these notes, thirty-one of them heard someone they had lost. Not a vague voice. Their person.
The study was shut down after Session 22. Inside the cover of the last binder somebody wrote three lines in pencil.
LISTEN. NEVER ANSWER.
THE DEAD CANNOT HEAR YOU.
SOMETHING ELSE CAN.
I'm digitizing it tonight.
MEMO 02. JANUARY 31. 2:14 AM.
[long silence, breathing]
It was Mom.
Iris, did you eat. That's what she said. Not the voicemail. I know every second of that voicemail, I've played it four hundred times. This was new. Her evening voice. The little click of her dentures on the s.
Then she said the yellow colander is in the garage, in the box with Daddy's tools, I know you've been looking.
I have been looking. I haven't told anyone that. Not one person.
MEMO 03. JANUARY 31. 9:40 AM.
It was in the garage. In Dad's tool box. Under the extension cord.
I'm sitting in her driveway holding a colander and I can't stop shaking.
