Under the Basilica of San Clemente in Rome, there is a church. Under that church, there is a pagan temple. Under that temple, there is a street, and the foundations of houses, and the sound of an underground river you can still hear rushing in the dark. Visitors go down level by level, through two thousand years, and at the bottom, you can put your hand on the wall and feel the water moving on the other side.1
This is not unusual. Sacred places tend to be built on top of older sacred places. Churches on temples. Temples on shrines. Shrines on whatever was there before anyone kept records. Every faith that arrives builds on the last one's floor.
And some floors go deeper than anyone expected. In southern Turkey, at a site called Gobekli Tepe, archaeologists have uncovered rings of carved stone pillars about eleven thousand six hundred years old: older than writing, older than farming, older than the wheel. The man who led the excavation believed that, after centuries of use, the whole complex was deliberately buried.2 Nobody knows what they were burying it from.
Pete Lund was not thinking about any of that. He was thinking about the budget.
