The Catholic Church has an official manual for exorcism. That part is not a secret. It was published in 1614 as part of the Rituale Romanum, revised in 1999. Translations are easy to find. It is mostly prayers. It instructs the priest to command the demon to leave, in the name of God, and to ask it nothing it does not need to answer, because demons lie, and because conversation is a door.1
The church still trains exorcists. Since 2005, a pontifical university in Rome has run an annual course on exorcism and prayers of liberation, and priests travel from around the world to take it.2 And in 2019, the Vatican quietly renamed its Secret Archive the Apostolic Archive. It holds roughly eighty-five kilometers of shelving. Scholars must apply to enter, request specific items, and are not permitted to browse.3
Gabriel Ruiz was hired to scan and translate a diocese's back archive before the building was sold. He worked alone in a climate-controlled basement under a green-shaded lamp, wearing cotton gloves, turning pages with a bone folder. He had a younger brother named Mateo, who was thirty-one and dying of a cancer that had started in his pancreas and gone everywhere by the time anyone looked.
Behind the shelf of 1614 Rituale editions, wedged against the wall and furred with dust, he found a second book. Twenty-two leaves of vellum, unbound, tied with a faded red cord. The title page said RITUALE SECUNDUM.
The first manual was for driving them out.
The second was for asking them in.
