The Haunted House Was Carbon Monoxide. That Didn't Explain the Fat Man.

The gas did not create them. It only let you see who was already in the room.

StatusThe 1921 case is documented. The note in this file is not on record.

In 1921, an eye doctor in Washington, D.C., named William Wilmer published a strange case in the American Journal of Ophthalmology.1

It was about a family he called the H's.

In 1912, Mr. and Mrs. H moved into a large old house with their children. Almost at once, things started happening.1

They all had headaches. They were tired all the time, and worse when they rested in bed. The children were pale and lost their appetites.1

Then the house began to show itself.

Mrs. H saw a dark-haired woman in black, who vanished. She saw her three times. A servant woke to find an old man and a young woman standing at the foot of her bed, and felt an unseen hand tap her shoulder before they disappeared. The H's young son saw a "big, fat man," and later complained that something heavy sat on his chest all night. Mr. H felt fingers on his throat.1

They heard footsteps in empty rooms. Bells ringing. Doors slamming. The clanging of a fire engine that was not there. People who had lived in the house before them reported the same things.1

Then Mr. H's brother remembered reading about a family whose symptoms had come from a broken heater. A doctor came and examined the old furnace in the basement. It was in terrible condition. It was leaking fumes into the rooms.1

Carbon monoxide. A gas with no color and no smell. In low doses, it causes headaches, confusion, tiredness, and hallucinations.2

The family moved out while the furnace was fixed. When they came back, the strange sights and sounds stopped.1

Case closed.

Tony Reyes fixed furnaces in Washington, D.C. He had been doing it for twenty-three years, mostly in old row houses where the heating systems were older than his grandmother.

He knew the 1921 story. Every HVAC guy in D.C. knew it. When a customer called saying their house was haunted, the joke in the shop was: Check the heat exchanger first. Then call the priest.

So when a young couple on Capitol Hill called in November and said their four-year-old son kept telling them a fat man sat on his bed at night, Tony packed his CO meter and drove over smiling.

He found exactly what he expected. A cracked heat exchanger in a furnace that should have been replaced in the 1990s. His meter jumped the moment he opened the basement door. Not enough to kill anyone yet. Enough to give a family headaches. Enough to make a little boy see things.

He shut the furnace down, opened the windows, and told the parents the 1921 story. They laughed with relief. The mother cried a little.

The old furnace had to come out. Behind it, when they pulled it from the wall, there was an even older coal furnace, bricked into the foundation, and behind that, tucked into a gap in the brick, a folded paper, a child's drawing, and a small brass bell.
