Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to move.

You can open your eyes. You can see your room. But your arms and legs will not respond. You cannot turn your head. You cannot speak or scream.

And you are not alone.

Something is in the room. Standing in the corner. Or at the foot of the bed. Or sitting on your chest, pressing down, so heavy you can barely breathe.

This is sleep paralysis. It is real, and it is common. A major review of studies found that about one in thirteen people experience it at least once in their life. Among students, it is closer to one in four.1

Scientists understand the basic mechanism. When you dream, your brain switches off your muscles so you do not act out your dreams. Sometimes you wake up before the switch turns back on. Your mind is awake. Your body is still asleep. And the dreaming part of your brain spills into the waking world.1

What scientists cannot fully explain is why so many people, in so many different countries and centuries, see the same thing.2

A dark figure. An intruder. A presence that is watching, and that seems to mean harm.

In Newfoundland they call it the Old Hag. In Japan, kanashibari. In 1781 the painter Henry Fuseli painted it: a sleeping woman with a squat demon crouched on her chest.2 People who have never heard of any of these stories describe the same visitor.

Most people who have had sleep paralysis will tell you the worst part is not that they cannot move.

It is that the thing in the room seems to know they are awake.

Marcus Webb ran overnight sleep studies at a clinic in Tucson. Patients came in at nine at night, he glued sensors to their heads and chests, and he watched them sleep on an infrared camera until six in the morning. Brain waves. Breathing. Heart rate. Eye movements. It was quiet work. He liked it.

In April, a patient named Ellen Carr came in for sleep paralysis. She was fifty-one, a high school librarian, calm and funny. She had been having episodes for thirty years. Lately, almost every night.

On her intake form, under Describe your episodes, she had written a careful paragraph. A dark figure in the corner of the bedroom. Tall. No face. It comes closer each time.

Then she had underlined one sentence.

Never ask it what it wants.

Marcus asked her about it while he applied the sensors.

"My grandmother had them too," Ellen said. "She told me that when I was little. You'll see it. It's fine. It can't do anything. Just never ask it what it wants." She smiled. "Because if you ask, it has to tell you. And then it's yours."
