The best night at summer camp was always flashlight tag.
It was simple. One person was It. They got the flashlight. Everyone else ran into the woods behind the cabins and hid. The person with the flashlight counted to fifty, then went looking. If the beam of light landed on you, you were out. You had to walk back to the fire pit and sit there until the game ended.
The last one not caught won. They got to be It next.
We played it every Friday. Ten of us. In the woods, in the pitch dark, with no moon.
The last Friday of camp, I was It.
I counted to fifty with my eyes closed, at the fire pit. I heard everyone run, laughing, crashing through the brush. Then it got quiet. Then I opened my eyes and turned on the flashlight and walked into the woods.
The beam was a narrow white circle. Everything outside it was black. You could only see what you pointed at. Tree trunks. Ferns. Rocks. A shoe sticking out from behind a log.
"Got you, Ryan!"
He groaned and walked back to the fire.
The fire is still burning
