THE CAMPFIRE · ORIGINAL
The Echo
Hikers love the canyon because it echoes everything you shout. Three times. One evening, the echo started answering back with words nobody said.

There's a canyon in the desert where my friends and I used to hike in college. Red rock walls, five hundred feet high, curving around a dry wash. Nothing grows there but some scrub and a few twisted junipers.
It's famous for its echo.
If you stand at the bend in the canyon and shout, the echo comes back three times. Clear as a bell. "Hello!" Hello. Hello. Hello. Getting fainter each time. Everyone who goes there does it. Everyone laughs.
We camped at the bend one night in October. Five of us. We shouted our names at the walls and listened to them come back, over and over, until it got dark.
After dinner, my friend Marcus stood up by the fire and shouted into the dark.
"Who's out there?"
Who's out there?
Who's out there?
Who's out there?
We laughed.
He shouted, "Anybody home?"
Anybody home?
Anybody home?
I am.
The fire is still burning
