Tomas Vale fixed clocks in the shop his grandfather had opened in 1951. He was good with small, patient things. He was not good with large, fast ones. His wife had left him four years earlier, kindly, saying she needed someone who lived in the present tense. He had his daughter Ana every week from Sunday to Wednesday, and he lived for those three days, and spent the other four tuning other people's time.
The watch came in a padded envelope with no return address and no note. A gold pocket watch, heavy, very old, with a hairline crack across the crystal. It ran exactly eleven seconds fast. He corrected it. An hour later it was eleven seconds fast again.
Tomas knew better than most people that time is not as solid as it looks. The clocks on GPS satellites run about thirty-eight millionths of a second fast every day, because time passes at a different speed up there. Engineers correct them constantly, or every map on every phone would drift by miles a day.1 In 1971, two physicists flew atomic clocks around the world on commercial airliners and brought them home measurably out of step with the clocks that had stayed behind.2 Time bends. It always has. It just usually doesn't bend this far.
He opened the case to look at the movement. Engraved on the inside of the back, in tiny, worn letters, were eight words.
ANY DAY ONCE. NEVER THE SAME DAY TWICE.
That night, by accident, he wound the crown backward. Eleven full turns. The shop went dim, like a lamp being turned down, and then it was morning. The same morning. The newspaper on the step with the same headline. The same customer at the door at 9:05 with the same broken carriage clock.
