The first thing the book told Delia Shaw to buy was chalk.
The second was a new candle, never lit. The third was a stick of hazel cut at sunrise, which she could not find in Seattle in February, so she bought a hazel walking stick on eBay and hoped that counted. She had stopped asking herself whether any of it was real somewhere around the third week of not sleeping.
The book was a 1904 printing of the Goetia, the first part of a seventeenth-century manuscript called the Lesser Key of Solomon. It is a real book. You can buy it in a dozen editions. It lists seventy-two spirits by name, with their ranks, their seals, the shapes they take, and what each one can be compelled to do. Find hidden treasure. Teach languages. Cause love. Destroy an enemy.1
It draws its authority from a story far older than itself. In a Greek text called the Testament of Solomon, written down sometime in the first centuries after Christ, King Solomon is given a ring by the archangel Michael. With it, he summons demons one by one, interrogates them, and puts them to work building the Temple in Jerusalem. The wisest king in the Bible, the story says, built God's house with slave labor from hell.2
Somebody had owned Delia's copy before her and worked through it with a fountain pen. Most of the spirits were crossed out with short, bitter notes. Liar. Wanted blood. Useless. One page had a star, and three lines in the margin.
DOES WHAT IS ASKED. DOES IT THOROUGHLY.
