The Exchange · 25 lots

Objects that turned up in the files.

Intake · The Exchange · From the previous keeper

I did not go looking for any of these. They found me. A key in a drawer that was empty the night before. A mirror in a box with my name written on it in a hand I did not recognize. A radio that was already tuned when I plugged it in.

For eleven years I have kept them. Catalogued them. Carried what comes with them, which is heavier than the objects and does not show up on any scale. I was told this would happen. I was told that one day someone would arrive who was meant to take them from me, and that I would know them because they would come in without being invited.

You came in without being invited.

I am not selling you anything. The objects do not work that way. They choose, and they have always chosen, since long before there were stores or money or me. All I am permitted to do is open the case, step back, and say the words I was given when it was my turn:

What I carried, I set down.
What was mine is now yours.
The universe has chosen. It does not choose twice.
